Balkan wine you won't find on the usual shelf

The Balkans have been making wine for centuries, yet their grapes stay largely unknown abroad. That is exactly what makes them worth opening: Tamjanika smells of muscat and orange blossom, Prokupac gives dark fruit and firm tannin, Vranac is deep and spicy, and Herzegovinian Žilavka stays taut even in high summer. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are here too, and they taste different on these soils.

Every bottle comes from a family winery — among them Vinarija Aleksandrović, Matalj, Vukoje, Milijan Jelić, Vinarija Jović, Jovac, Podrum Čokot, Plavinac and Vila Vina.
