Some rakijas you drink, others you talk about. For a few years now, Gružanska Zlatna Nit has belonged to the second kind — ever since expert juries tasted it at Belgrade's big trade fairs.
A distillery in the heart of Šumadija
Behind the label is the family distillery Aleksić Prvi from the village of Guberevac, on the slopes of Kotlenik between Kraljevo and Kragujevac — in Šumadija, one of Serbia's best known fruit-growing regions. Prvoslav Aleksić and his wife Vladanka farm around ten hectares of their own orchards: roughly six hectares of plums, plus quince and Williams pears.
Zlatna Nit is made from selected ripe fruit of seven plum varieties, among them the old native crvena ranka, požegača and dugačka ranica. After rapid fermentation and fractional distillation, the spirit rests for nine years before it goes into the 0.75-litre bottle.
Belgrade, November 2023: overall winner
At the expert tasting of the Wine Vision by Open Balkan fair on 14 November 2023, held at the Radisson Collection Hotel, Old Mill Belgrade, 51 samples were judged across plum, quince, grape and other categories. A jury of nine tasters chaired by Professor Ninoslav Nikićević named Aleksić Prvi, with a twenty-year-old plum prepečenica, the overall winner of the tasting. Grand gold medals in the best Serbian plum brandy and quality categories are also credited to the house.
On the podium again in 2025
Two years later, on 22 and 23 November 2025, the judging took place at the Belgrade Fair. Gružanska Zlatna Nit took a silver medal in the plum category — in a field that grows larger and stronger every year.
What happens in the glass
Nine years in a barrel turn a clear spirit into an amber drink: a soft first sip, dried plum, a hint of vanilla and oak, a long warm finish. Serve it at 16–18 °C in a tulip-shaped glass — not ice cold, or you lose the very aroma those nine years were spent on. Mature cheese, dried fruit and walnuts make good company.
